Surfing in Florianopolis and Santa Catarina

But first, we will shortly introduce to you the importance of surfing for Florianopolis:

In Santa Catarina you can find the best known surf spots either on the island Florianopolis or on the coastal beaches of the mainland. Florianopolis, the surf capital of Brazil, impresses with its dreamlike beaches and an beautiful landscape, as well as with perfect waves. On windy days also kitesurfers and windsurfers will have much fun. Surfing is a very important part of the lives of the inhabitants of the island. Old or young - in Floripa is surfing an all-day activity and is a passion of the inhabitants of all ages and social status. Fantastic wave conditions make the surfers hearts leap for joy on their hunt for the perfect wave.

Excellent surf conditions are convenient for beginners as well as for professionals. Due to this fact, Santa Catarina also was for years the event place for the WTC, the international surf competitions of the World Champion Tour. The French professional surfer Jeremy Flores was seen here and the sympathetic musicians and surfers Donavon Frankenreiter, Ben Harper and Tom Curren surfed in the waves after an Open Air Concert at the Riozonho beach of Campeche. The former surf world champion Fábio Goveia has his residence in Florianopolis.

Swells and surf conditions

 

In Florianopolis stronger swells from the South Atlantic meet those from the Antarctis. In the summer months (December to March) swells from the East and Southeast are dominant. In the remaining months, there are mostly south swells at the coast of Florianopolis and Santa Catarina. The best surf conditions can be met between the beginning of March until the end of May and at the end of Sempember until the beginning of November. Due to the cold water temperatures especially in the winter months (June to September), you should wear a wetsuit.

Naufragados

 

The beach of Naufragados is only accessible via an about a 40 minute hike through the Atlantic rain forest and by boat on days with low waves. The beach is located at the southernmost tip of Florianopolis and offers breathtaking scenery and a view of the mainland and the islands opposite. The beach Naufragados offers a high swell resistance and good hollow waves, which however, tend to close quickly.

Matadeiro

 

The beach Matadeiro is located in a beautiful bay and surrounded by green mountains. The left breaking, strong waves at the mouth of Matadeiro beach are particularly good, but also quite volatile.

Lagoinha do Leste

Morro das Pedras

Campeche

 

At the southern part of the beach of Campeche with a strong Southswell there is a right break building up, with a very long; to the "right" outgoing wave that attracts many surfers. These are known as the "Direitas Campeche" by the locals. Only the southern beach of Campeche is suitable for beginners with small waves. Otherwise, this beach is suitable only for experienced surfers.

Galheta

Mocambique

Guarda do Embau
